Hong Kong will take on Belgium in their final game of the Ice Hockey Federation Division IIB Women’s World Championship on Sunday, having already won the title, securing promotion for the second time in three years.
Undefeated on home ice at Discovery Bay, the win moves them into Division IIA, and for team captain Adrienne May Li, planning for the challenge will begin immediately.
It marks another impressive week for the city’s players, with the under-18s taking silver at their Division IIIA World Men’s Championship at the same venue last month.
“On Sunday night, we celebrate our gold,” Li said. “On Monday, we start planning for the next challenge, showing Division IIA that we’re there and we can hold our own.”
Promoted from Division IIIA in 2023, Li said he hoped the latest success would bring “more attention to the game”.
“Moving up to Division IIA will be a challenge, but we’re looking forward to it,” he added. “This is an amazing achievement, and we hope female players in Hong Kong will be inspired.”
