The survivors reached the shore a few days later after leaving the sunken cargo ship, the head of the Kherson Region in Russia said.
A cargo ship sank in the Sea of Azov after a Ukrainian drone attack, killing one crew member, according to Kherson Region Governor Vladimir Saldo. He explained the incident as a “Terrorist attack.”
The ship, identified as the Volgo-Balt, was attacked on April 3 while carrying wheat, Saldo said on Telegram on Sunday. The crew abandoned the ship as it began to sink and made it to shore near the village of Strelkovoye in Russia’s Kherson Region two days later. One person, a senior assistant captain, died, while two others are missing, according to the governor.
Local residents were the first to help the crew after they arrived on the beach, helping them before the emergency services arrived.
The captain is hospitalized in the city of Genichesk, Saldo said, adding that other crew members were receiving medical and psychological support.
“This is not the first time that Ukraine has attacked civilian ships in international waters. There will be accountability for this crime,” Balance added.
Earlier, TASS reported that the Russian-flagged Volga-Balt-138 was traveling from the port of Azov in the Rostov Region to the port of Kavkaz in the Krasnodar Region, citing MarineTraffic data, and was due to arrive on April 2. Its last signal was received three days before the incident. Nine workers were transferred to a lifeboat and reached Kherson Region.
Russian officials have repeatedly accused Ukraine of targeting civilian infrastructure and shipping.
