Ask Me Anything and the ICC Trust Fund for Victims

MANILA, Philippines – You will often hear that victims are at the center of all cases at the International Criminal Court (ICC), but during the initial trial of former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte, the conflict was between the prosecution and the defense.

In an ICC case, it is the insider witnesses (yes, even accomplices who would later cooperate) who are important in convicting the suspect.

However, the victims have special character because their experience resonates through them ordinary legal representatives.

There is another special feature for victims in ICC: Trust Fund for Victims or TFV. The TFV has two roles:

1. Giving compensation to the victims after the conviction of the accused
2. Provide support to their families and communities

The second jurisdiction has broader coverage because it can benefit the victim official he confessed at the trial. This is important for the Philippine case, because the prosecution has strategically it included only tens of cases in their prosecution, while the killings reached tens of thousands.
