Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado said Saturday she “doesn’t regret” symbolically handing US President Donald Trump his Nobel Peace Prize in January.
“There is a leader in the world, a head of state in the world who risked the lives of his country’s citizens for the freedom of Venezuela,” he told a press conference in Madrid.
Machado presented Trump with his Nobel Prize when he met him at the White House just two weeks after he ordered US forces to attack Caracas and usurp Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro.
Trump, who has long coveted the award, is currently embroiled in a Middle East war he started with his ally, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with airstrikes against Iran in late February.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee, which awards the peace prize, made it clear after Machado presented Trump with his 2025 Nobel medal that the actual honor it represents “cannot be revoked, shared, or transferred to others”.
Machado said Trump’s military operation to seize Maduro, who is currently being held in New York on drug charges in the United States, is “something we Venezuelans will never forget”.
