In the April 12 parliamentary elections, Péter Magyar’s Tisza party won a landslide victory, winning 141 seats among 199 in the Hungarian national parliament, when Orbán’s Fidesz party he came in a distant second with only 52 seats.
Orbán said the group of Fidesz parliamentarians will be led by Gergely Gulyás, who has been serving as an observer of the Prime Minister’s Office.
Orbán has held a seat in parliament since 1990, and has led Fidesz throughout that period. He has served as the prime minister of Hungary since 2010.
Magyar is expected to be appointed prime minister by parliament early May. The supremacy of his party in parliament may facilitate faster approval of the necessary democratic reforms unlock €17 billion of EU funds which were prevented due to the shortcomings of the rule of law under Orbán’s tenure.
