The most surprising thing about the attempted attack on Saturday night’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner at the Washington Hilton was how unsurprising it was.
Even before the gunman tried to breach the secured area outside the hotel lobby, the event’s guest list was a grim picture of political violence in the United States. President Donald Trump, who survived two experiments on his life during the 2024 campaign, he was moved by Secret Service agents. Erika Kirk, whose husband Charlie Kirk was he was killed a few months ago at a university event in Utah, he was he came out in tears. Republican Representative Steve Scalise, who in 2017 he was shot and the left fielder at Congressional baseball practice, led by safety Democratic Rep. Jared Moskowitzwho helped lead the Parliamentary inquiry into January 6 attack on the Capitol.
CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, who the network was targeted in 2018 by a serial attacker who he went after Trump’s criticshe was close to the gunman when the shooting started and took out some of the weapons the statement of the first witnesses.
That is only recent history. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whose father and uncle were each assassinated in the 1960s, was also in the room. And this year’s dinner was held in the same hotel where Ronald Regan was shot in 1981. Locals still often refer to it as the “Hinckley Hilton,” a reference to Reagan’s bomber.
Fortunately, no one was seriously hurt this time, but the incident has once again shaken the American political scene, where people know from experience how much worse it could have been.
What happened at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner?
According to officials, a man armed with a rifle, shotgun, and knives was charged at a checkpoint outside the theater where the president was scheduled to deliver a speech around 8:30 pm ET. One Secret Service agent was shot and hit in his protective clothing – Trump said later “he is doing well” – before agents can subdue and capture the suspect alive.
Although there was discussion about continuing the event later, Trump said he ultimately supported the proposal for law enforcement to postpone it until another date.
Who arrested him?
The accused has been identified as Cole Thomas Allena 31-year-old teacher and engineer from Torrance, California. He traveled across the country by train and booked a room in the same hotel as an earlier incident, according to Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche.
What do we know about his motives?
As the investigation continues, Allen is reported sent notices to family members shortly before the attack. The New York Post published a due copy the memo, which included criticism of the regime’s war in Iran, military raids on alleged drug boats, and deportation policies, indicated that Allen had planned to target “administration officials” while avoiding harming others “if possible.” He also expressed surprise with the document that the security at the hotel was poorer than he expected.
In his comments after the attack, Trump criticized security at the event and he argued repeatedly that the incident strengthens his case the planned lobby of the White House, which he wants to build on the East Wing which has now been demolished. The new position, though, will not affect this special event. WHCA is a private organization and therefore protects its own territories.
What is the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner?
The White House Correspondents Association is a nonprofit organization that represents reporters who cover the White House and advocates for media access to the federal government. The group is best known for the annual fundraising dinner it hosted on Saturday, a longtime Washington institution that usually features a keynote speech by a comedian (a thinker, this time) and a cartoon speech by a sitting president, as well as an homage to the press and the First Amendment. It is regularly attended by prominent members of the media, politicians, celebrities and business leaders.
Even before Trump’s election, the dinner has long been a controversial event, with critics complaining that it makes the media appear too self-congratulatory or very friendly with the politicians who deal with them.
Trump has a personal history with it, too: In 2011, President Barack Obama he mocked him on stage after bus-Student host led a national campaign to raise false theories about his birth certificate. Trump he said in March that he boycotted the event as president for both terms “because the Press was very mean to me,” but that he planned to attend for the first time this year after the organizers “asked me, very nicely, to be the Celebrant at this year’s Dinner.” Most Democrats, in turn, seemed to be avoid his appearance this yearwhile journalists and press organizations had encouraged attendees to use the event to protest the White House treatment of freedom of speech issues.
Allen is expected to appear in federal court on Monday to face charges. The senators plan to schedule a meeting with the Secret Service this week to to discuss the security issues raised by the attack.
