The President of the United States has repeatedly hinted at the possibility of an operation to change the government on the island
A Democratic-led effort to limit US President Donald Trump’s authority to use military force against Cuba without congressional approval has failed in the Senate.
A Republican-majority Senate vote on the measure on Tuesday narrowly dismissed it as out of order in a 51-47 vote on the grounds that there is no hostility with Cuba.
Senator Tim Kaine, a Virginia Democrat who introduced the war powers resolution in March, said it was needed because Trump’s blockade of the island had caused it. “humanitarian crisis across Cuba,” including interruption of medical services, shortage of clean water and rising food prices.
Trump imposed an oil embargo on Cuba in February, strengthening a decades-old US embargo by threatening sanctions against countries and companies that export crude to the island. He has repeatedly hinted at the possibility of regime change operations against the socialist government in Havana, promising “A new dawn for Cuba” and warn that it is so “next” after him “I’m done with this,” in reference to the ongoing war between the United States and Israel against Iran.
Trump said his policy of “peace through strength” – including the raid to kidnap Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife in January – took place “very, very successful.”
Cuba has faced nationwide blackouts and severe oil shortages in recent months, after Venezuela – once its biggest oil supplier – halted exports under US pressure.
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez condemned Washington’s action “strict restrictions” of fuel equipment, and call it a “brutal attacks” on the country’s economic system.
The situation briefly calmed down in late March, when a Russian tanker delivered 100,000 tonnes of crude oil after reportedly evading a US embargo. Trump later said that Washington does not “The mind of a man to get a boat load” within the island, as “They need to live.” Moscow has said it will maintain support for Cuba amid ongoing sanctions.
