The United Nations It’s bloated, costly, needs reform, and often works against American interests, but pulling out of the global body would allow China to expand its influence and leave Washington in a dire situation, according to testimony before a House oversight committee on Wednesday.
The hearing came as the administration of the President of the United States Donald Trump has put “America first” on international funding reform, leaving the United Nations, over the past 18 months, in what Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called a “fiscal move”.
US debt currently amounts to some US$2.2 billion for its regular budget and US$1.8 billion for peacekeeping.
“Something is systematically rotten within the organization, but that doesn’t mean we have to let it go,” said Jared Moskowitz, a Democrat from Florida. “Leaving the United Nations only accelerates China’s progress there.”

“You know, they went around and spent a ton of money in all these little countries and got a ton of votes at the United Nations,” he told the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Oversight and Intelligence.
