The government’s decision to suspend basketball betting has not affected the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s (HKJC) drive to develop the sport at grassroots level in the city.
Around 100 young Hong Kong basketball players are set to receive advanced training over the next two months, as the East Asian Premier League (EASL) unveiled its Future Champions program this week.
In cooperation with HKJC, 96 boys under the age of 15, divided into eight teams of 12 players, will train together twice a week and as a team for two months.
The program was also launched in Macau and Cebu City with four teams of 10 young players in each city.
A bill to legalize basketball betting in Hong Kong was passed last September and was scheduled to be launched this year. However, the government postponed it last month.
