Founded by Zooey Deschanel and her ex-husband, filmmaker Jacob Pechenik, Lettuce Grow makes a variety of gardens, including a new one that doesn’t require a pump. As I explained when I went through it last yearit is as if the giant strawberry plant was reimagined as a piece of 2001: A Space Odyssey. The Farmstand’s younger sibling, the Nook, recently started selling at Costco and immediately it became an internet sensation among Costco lobbyists. (Yes, Costco lobbyists it’s something.) Even my own mother texted me with surprise when I saw it in the store, despite having seen full-sized lettuce growing in my house many times.

In short, if you’re looking for a gift with a wow factor, the Lettuce Grow garden will definitely deliver, and right now. All Farm Yards—and the Tackle Set—are 20 percent off through May 10 when you enter coupon code MOM20.

Each Farm comes with a balance of seedlings to be ordered when you are ready. When I first inspected the Farm, outbreaks of insects (aphids, whiteflies) were a significant issue for the seedlings, which are shipped from the nursery. However, the company has introduced a quarantine process, the instructions of which are on the seedling package. I followed it with my seedlings to Counterstand, and since then I have had no problems with bugs.

Note that the pump at the Farmhouse runs every hour and sounds like a flushing toilet for about five minutes straight, so make sure your gift is okay with this, and may want to add a dollop ($60 from Lettuce Growor you can probably find a cheap one on Amazon) to make sure it’s easy to move around. It is more or less immobile when full of water. For detailed maintenance needs, check out my full review. I’ve now been using the system through two growing “seasons” and still consider it a good buy.
