At least 18 people have died in floods and landslides following heavy rains in Kenya, as bad weather continues to hit large parts of the country, the national police service reported on Sunday.
Mudslides have hit several regions in the central and eastern regions of the country, leaving families homeless and causing extensive damage to houses and infrastructure.
“The National Police Service has confirmed the loss of 18 lives as a result of these incidents,” the police said in the statement.
Emergency response teams have been deployed to carry out search and rescue operations, evacuate residents from high-risk areas, and deploy relief supplies. Officials are also assessing the areas most likely to experience more landslides in an effort to prevent further disasters, with fears growing that the situation could worsen if the rains continue.
This is the second flood to hit some parts of Kenya in less than two months. In March, severe flooding in the African state claimed the lives of 81 people. The city of Nairobi was the worst affected with 37 people. The country is now in the middle of its rainy season, which usually peaks in early May.
Heavy rains at the end of 2025 have also caused flooding in southern Africa, draining systems and causing rivers and dams to exceed their capacity. In April, at least 42 people were killed in Angola after heavy rains caused flooding in many provinces.
In South Africa, prolonged heavy rains have fallen in Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces, killing at least 30 people, destroying thousands of homes, and causing evacuations, including in the Kruger National Park.
Zimbabwe has been hit by severe flooding, with at least 70 deaths, 51 injuries, and more than 1,000 homes destroyed since early January.
