Police say the leader of the National Colored Congress interfered in the investigation into the murder of the leader of the ANC Youth Union in 2017.
South African Member of Parliament and National Colored Congress leader Fadiel Adams has been arrested in Cape Town on suspicion of fraud and obstruction linked to allegations of interference in the investigation into the murder of ANC Youth Union leader Sindiso Magaqa in 2017, the police have said.
This comes after he was ordered by the Political Killing Task Force to report to the nearest police station in relation to charges related to fraud and failure or obstruction of justice.
Adams was arrested by PKTT members after he surrendered in Parliament Village on Tuesday.
Earlier on Tuesday, the South African Police Service (SAPS) said its Political Assassination Team had called on Adams to turn himself in at his nearest police station. National police spokeswoman Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said officers had a J50 warrant for Adams’ arrest.
“The document relates to serious allegations that he interfered with the ongoing investigation into the killing of the late leader of the ANC Youth Union, Mr Sindiso Magaqa,” Mathe said. He said investigators found that Adams allegedly intervened with the convicted attacker at the most sensitive and advanced stage of the investigation.
On Sunday, IOL News reported that Adams made a series of allegations against the SAPS and KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, alleging that members of the Co-ordinated Political Killing Squad raided the home he previously owned in Mitchell’s Plain.
Speaking at a press conference in Parliament, Adams claimed that about 15 members of the task force raided a house in Westridge on Saturday to look for him.
He claimed officers did not issue a search or arrest warrant and allegedly pointed a gun at a woman, assaulted a 12-year-old boy and injured a family while searching inappropriate property.
Adams said he had sold the property a few weeks ago and no longer lived there. “With a budget of hundreds of millions of dollars per year, this corruption unit can’t even get a proper address,” she said and added that an innocent teacher had pointed a gun at her and her husband had to lie down.
He said he opened a case of threats against the SAPS and it is alleged that the raid was planned by Mkhwanazi. When asked why there was no photographic evidence of the alleged raid, Adams said residents were too afraid to take pictures.
He also addressed allegations that he used a blue light to escort Westville Prison, saying he was being escorted by metro police while carrying out his duties to interrogate convicted murderer Magaqa. According to Adams, the attacker had given a written statement claiming that the police were involved in the crime and was ready to give his evidence without seeking any benefit.
Adams criticized Mkhwanazi, saying he did not send officers to get the information and instead suggested to Parliament that Adams committed a crime. He said he contacted the Acting Minister of Police, Firoz Cachalia and the Acting Commissioner of Police in the country, Major General Puleng Dimpane, but did not receive any response.
Adams also sent emails he claimed were from Mkhwanazi about documents and communications with investigators, as well as a letter from the NCC detailing communications with his legal representative.
Police have not publicly responded to Adams’ allegations.
