Denmark’s king late on Friday accused Deputy Prime Minister Troels Lund Poulsen, leader of the far-right Venstre party, of trying to form the next government after Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen failed to form a new coalition.
After a close encounter in Denmark March 24 electionFrederiksen has been lead union negotiations with the intention of getting his third term in office. Frederiksen’s Social Democrats won the most votes in the parliamentary elections, but the party fell far short of a majority in the Folketing, Denmark’s parliament.
The royal house of Denmark made a statement Friday night announcing that King Frederik X “has asked the Chairman of the Liberal Party, Troels Lund Poulsen, to lead negotiations on the formation of a government that does not involve the participation of the Social Democrats and Moderates.”
Frederiksen on Friday evening accepted the risk of losing his post, telling reporters: “The Danes gave the Social Democrats the worst election results and have created the Folketing in such a way that a right-wing government can be formed – it could be that this is the beginning of that.”
