Hong Kong’s top time trialists have taken time out of their preparations for the Japan Championship this week to study the streets they hope will be paved with gold later this year.
Among Hong Kong’s 15-man squad in Izu City for four days of competition starting Thursday, Chloe Leung Wing-yee and Vincent Lau Wan-yau on Monday rode the “very technical course” that will host the Asian Games test race on September 20.
After finishing 22nd in the discipline at the 2025 World Road Championships, Leung claimed time trial silver from this year’s Asian Road Championships. Lau was the time trial bronze medalist at the last Asian Games in 2023.
“The course is in the middle of the countryside in the mountains,” said Herve Dagorne, Hong Kong’s head coach, likening the winding course to a rally driving course where competitors are directed by sailors in their passenger seats.
“It is very technical with ups and downs, steep hills and narrow roads.
“Wing-yee and Vincent rode it three or four times, and I charted it with the GPS so we had video of every corner. We’ll have to go back a lot to practice.”
