The European Union it will not ban the targeting of “conversion therapy”. LGBTQ people, but it will push member states to take action against such actions, it said on Wednesday.
So-called “conversion therapy” involves methods aimed at changing the sexual orientation or gender identity or expression of gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans people.
The EU stopped short of responding to calls from more than a million people, who signed a petition last May calling on the 27-nation bloc to ban the routes.
Conversion practices “have no place in our union”, said Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, which flew an LGBTQ flag outside its headquarters in Brussels on Wednesday.
Instead, the EU chief executive said he would make a proposal next year for member states to adopt a national-level ban.
