EU declares its reliance on global health as US cuts foreign aid – POLITICO


The strategy also condemns the “utilisation” of health and says closing “emerging gaps in global health sustainability” is essential.

The United States has been criticized by global health advocates for providing financing agreements and developing countries that have previously received USAID assistance, by returning disease surveys and providing America with disease data and in some cases rare minerals.

“Health is increasingly used in the pursuit of geographic and geographic interests,” writes the Commission. “Global health governance is moving away from international cooperation and humanitarian principles towards sometimes bilateral approaches.”

Stay the course

The commission wants to help strengthen countries’ health systems, fight fake news and tackle “dangerous dependencies” in supply chains – although it has not announced any new funding for its initiative.

To strengthen prevention, preparedness and response to disasters, the EU will invest in medicines, vaccines and diagnostics. It will also help to establish a new alliance for the development of medicine in the world and the centers of the European Union for treatment and diagnosis.

The EU will also support global health spending mapping, in collaboration with the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, the World Health Organization and the World Bank.
