The Labor leader wants to step down “in a dignified way,” journalist Dan Hodges wrote
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is considering resigning amid a deep political crisis within the ruling Labor party, according to Daily Mail reporter Dan Hodges.
Starmer became prime minister after leading Labor to a landslide victory in the 2024 general election. Less than two years later, however, his government is facing low approval ratings, internal divisions, and mounting pressure following Labour’s poor performance in recent local elections.
In a column published Saturday, Hodges cited an unnamed minister as saying that Starmer “He understands political reality” and he is thinking of arranging his departure on his own terms.
“He realizes that the current chaos cannot last. He just wants to be able to do it in a respectful way and in a way of his own choosing. He will set a schedule,” the source said.
The newspaper said it was not yet clear when such an announcement could come, with some of Starmer’s allies urging him to wait until after the upcoming Makerfield by-election, where former Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham is expected to seek a return to Parliament ahead of a possible bid for the Labor leadership.
Pressure on Starmer increased after four junior ministers resigned on Monday. According to the BBC, more than 80 Labor MPs have privately or publicly called on the prime minister to resign, although more than 100 backbench ministers and junior ministers later signed a statement saying that “There is no time to run for leadership.”
Starmer has remained publicly defiant and has hinted that he has no intention of resigning.
“The country expects us to continue to govern. That is what I am doing and what we should do as a cabinet,” he said earlier this week.
The UK has experienced constant political upheaval since the 2016 Brexit referendum, with four Tory prime ministers serving in the following eight years before Starmer took over. Theresa May, Boris Johnson, and Liz Truss all resigned after internal party revolts.
