Red carpet there 2026 Cannes Film Festival has more dress codes than a strict Catholic girls’ school. It looks like law breakers Demi MooreTilda Swinton and Bella Hadid will not be elected as school governors this year.
The official website for the film festival says that guests at the Grand Théâtre Lumière wear long dresses or tuxedos. You can get away with little black dresses, black pants, “dressy tops and black pants” but nudes, sneakers and tote bags are prohibited, as well as “voluminous clothes, especially those with large trains, which prevent the proper flow of traffic”.
Here are the red carpet rebels throwing caution to the wind in the south of France.
Bella Hadid in Schiaparelli
Good luck beating supermodel Bella Hadid and fine in a haute couture gown by Daniel Roseberry for Schiaparelli.
With a visual effect and a train, Hadid bent the rules with respect to the actress and model Jane Birkin’s Dress for the 1969 Cannes Film Festival. At the event, the woman who lent her name to the famous Hermes handbag wore a Pucci dress in the back to create a plunging neckline.
Hadid turned to Schiaparelli for the embellished updo that took 22,160 hours to create.
Tilda Swinton in Chanel
Tilda Swinton’s silver-embroidered velvet suit doesn’t qualify as black pants and an off-the-shoulder top, but the organizers of the Cannes Film Festival can make their case for Chanel creative director Matthieu Blazy.
At the AI conference in Cannes, Swinton said: “I believe as long as what we’re not delivering is formulaic and somehow boring the audience, AI has no chance.”
Swinton brought the same element of surprise to the red carpet.
Demi Moore in Self Portrait
As a member of this year’s official jury, as well Hamnet director Chloe ZhaoRuth Negga and Stellan Skarsgård, Medicine actress Demi Moore must have diplomatic immunity on the red carpet of the Cannes Film Festival.
The train of her special Showcase dress, worn on display Pola Negrabreak the law. The label is a favorite of Catherine, Princess of Wales.
Earlier in the festival, Moore tried her hand at wearing an elegant dress with a large bow and deliberately set herself apart from French label Matières Fécales. The label, which translates to Fecal Matter, is not worn by the Princess of Wales.
Kristen Stewart in Chanel
Evening actress Kristen Stewart doesn’t look like someone who stays in the law books.
The organizers of the Cannes Film Festival request “luxury shoes and shoes with or without a heel (no sneakers)” on the red carpet.
Her black and red embroidered dress from Chanel’s fall/winter 2026 collection is short, yet vintage. KOZAK 72 sneakers are a red flag. Well, we think they are elegant.
