Hong Kong tennis star Coleman Wong Chak-lam had to wait for his second main draw after falling at the final hurdle of qualifying for the French Open on Thursday.
Wong, who will turn 22 in the first week of June, was beaten in three sets by Juan Carlos Prado Angelo, going down 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in two hours and 21 minutes.
After dropping his opening two service games, Wong came back with one break but Prado Angelo survived the 10th game of nine deuces to come out on top.
In a topsy-turvy second, Wong’s two-game winning streak took one away from his Bolivian rival.
World No. 113 Wong managed the first break of a setter to lead 2-1, but 21-year-old Prado Angelo, the 2023 French Open runner-up, reeled off four straight games, before winning a point in the ninth game to advance to the first round.
Wong has played in the main draw once in his young career, reaching the third round of last year’s US Open, where he lost to Andrey Rublev in a thrilling five-set match.
In Thursday’s draw, all eyes were on men’s No. 1 seed Jannik Sinner after defending champion Carlos Alcaraz withdrew due to a hand injury.
