The leak is causing panic in Berlin. The Pensions Commission is reportedly discussing behind closed doors a phased model that would gradually raise the retirement age to 70 by the 2060s and reduce the pension rate. As the union members push back in anger, it becomes clear: the declining population and economy are forcing the black and red union to take drastic action. Gordon Repinski analyzes why June 30th will be a scary day for the elderly community and the future of the union.
In a 200-second interview, Hesse Prime Minister Boris Rhein (CDU) calls for a new priority from the Chancellor. Rhein advocates a different view of the retirement age, calls for stricter restrictions on those who refuse to work, tax-free overtime and clearly rejects calls for higher inheritance tax.
Another major construction project is to divide the members of the coalition: the reform of the electoral law. Rasmus Buchsteiner reports on “Stored Conflicts” in the Chancellery. While the SPD insists on equality, the CDU/CSU wing fears for its existence: according to current estimates, the CDU/CSU is threatened with 60 fewer seats in parliament due to the new limit rules.
