Kyle Busch, two-time Cup Series champion, has passed away at the age of 41. What happened, you ask? The NASCAR legend died after being hospitalized with a ‘serious illness,’ his family revealed. He was scheduled to compete in the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on May 24, 2026.
Busch was testing in a Chevrolet racing simulator in Concord on Wednesday when he became unresponsive and was transported to a Charlotte hospital, several people familiar with the situation told The Associated Press.
The cause of his death has not yet been made clear.
Kyle was ‘enthusiastic and highly skilled’
A joint statement on behalf of the Busch family, Richard Childress Racing, and NASCAR was released on social media, in memory of the sports champion.
“Our entire NASCAR family is saddened by the loss of Kyle Busch. A future Hall of Famer, Kyle was a rare, once-in-a-generation talent. He was fierce, passionate, knowledgeable, and cared deeply about the sport and the fans,” the statement said.
The statement went on to say that ‘throughout a career spanning more than two decades, Kyle set national series wins records, won championships at NASCAR’s highest level, and developed the next generation of drivers as an owner in the Truck Series. His sharp wit and competitive spirit created an emotional connection with fans of all ages, creating a proud and loyal ‘Rowdy Nation’.”
“Our thoughts go out to Samantha, Brexton, and Lennix, Kyle and Samantha’s parents, Kurt and the entire Kyle family, Richard and Judy Childress, everyone at Richard Childress Racing, his teammates, friends and fans. NASCAR lost a legend today, far too soon,” the statement continued. They also urged everyone to respect the Busch family’s privacy.

Kyle’s words of ‘you never know’ go viral
After winning the 2026 Ecosave 200 at Dover Motor Speedway on May 15, Busch talked about appreciating every win in his career. “Because you never know when the end is, you know? I know very well, unfortunately, with the Cup stuff, but here with the truck stuff right now, it’s just amazing to be part of Spire Motorsports. Love coming to Dover, it’s always one of my favorite places to race,” he said. After Busch’s death, fans see the quote in a completely different light.
Just LAST WEEK, when Kyle Busch won his 69th NASCAR Truck Series race, he was asked why this victory “never gets old.”
Kyle’s answer?
“Because you never know when it’s the end.”

Rest in peace, Kyle Busch!
