During his appearance on Sky, Hastie also accused the government of being “insensitive” in its handling of the return of a group of Australian women and children who had links to Islamic State.

“(The government’s) job is to protect Australians, and these people betrayed their country. They joined one of the deadliest terrorist organizations of the century, and now they come back, and say to the government, ‘Oh, we have nothing to do with this’,” the Liberal leader said.

“Well, they have a job, and that’s to protect us and manage the risk these people pose, and so I think it’s important that Tony Burke, the home secretary, takes a bigger role. He can’t be as careless as he’s been. We need to see some action, and we need to see this government take these risks seriously.”
