The New York Knicks are returning to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999, and the verdict still doesn’t seem right.
Think about the timeline: The kid born the last time the Knicks played for a championship is now 27. An entire generation of Knicks fans, including an Oscar nominee Timothy Chalametthey reached adulthood having never once watched their team play meaningful basketball in June.
Now here they are. Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, Josh Hart, Mikal Bridges, and OG Anunoby are four wins away from a championship. He has won four times to end a 53-year title drought. Four wins from becoming the first New York men’s team in one of the Big Four Sports to win it all since 2011, while the New York Liberty’s championship banner in 2024 is still accepted and respected.
The most amazing part of all is the vibe. Knicks fans are known for “passionate“feelings for their team and other teams around the league (example. Trae Young) Like one X post clearly statesif the Knicks win it all, “the city could really be out of control.”
For now, at least, New York City seems happy. Really, quietly, almost unbelievably happy. Like a huge weight has been lifted from everyone’s shoulders, and the city that never sleeps is only right to be happy right now.

After sweeping the Cavaliers, Knicks fans filled the streets of New York, which was enough. While the Thunder and Spurs are legitimately going to war in the West, there is no concern in New York. Only fans who really enjoy being fans of their team maybe for the first time in their lives.

Even city politics has entered. The newly elected mayor of the city, Zohran Mamdani, appeared in Game 2 last week in a nosebleed at Madison Square Garden, rooting for the Knicks.
After 4 match wins, Mamdani tweeted NYC Sanitation reporting sweep. It’s the kind of hateful, heartfelt post that makes you love a politician even more. It also helps that he has been a long-time fan of England’s Arsenal soccer team, which also only recently broke its title drought after years of alleged strangleholds.

It is the right energy. Meanwhile, former mayor Eric Adams, who never misses a beat, marked the occasion by posting what appeared to be AI-generated video of dancing broomswhich somehow sums up perfectly where his relationship with the city stands right now.
There’s a fair comparison to be made with Detroit over the past few years. The Lions finally got some good results after decades of being one of the NFL’s most beloved franchises, and something changed in the city beside them. of Detroit violent crime has fallen to the lowest levels in 60 years in 2023 – the same season the Lions went 12-5 and won their first playoff game since 1991.
Now, criminologists will tell you the reason is complicated, and sure enough, they’re right. But there is some kind of magic in the whole city to have a team worth believing in again.
