Drones and missiles were intercepted over Kuwait on Thursday, the kingdom’s authorities said
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it targeted a US airbase in the region on Thursday in response to fresh attacks, the second armed clash between the rivals this week.
The latest clashes began with reports of explosions shortly after midnight in the southern Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas, which is home to a naval base.
In a press release, a US official said US forces shot down four Iranian Kamikaze drones. “posed a threat near the Strait of Hormuz” and had also hit the ground control center in Bandar Abbas “it was about to launch a fifth drone.”
The officer explained the actions as “measured, purely defensive, and intended to maintain the ceasefire.”
Hours later, several missiles and drones were intercepted over Kuwait, the kingdom’s Defense Ministry said. Independent analysts suggested online that the missiles may be headed for the Ali Al Salem Air Base near the Kuwaiti-Iraqi border.
The IRGC later released a statement saying it targeted a US base involved in the earlier strike at a site near Bandar Abbas Airport. “The attacker is fully responsible for the outcome,” the statement said.
Hostilities followed the United States “self defense” Attacks on Iranian naval vessels and locations in the southern province of Hormozgan on Monday. Tehran denounced the attacks as a major violation of the ceasefire reached on April 8.
Although US officials indicated this week that the sides are close to reaching a preliminary peace agreement, there are no signs that Washington or Tehran are ready to compromise. Both countries have accused each other of imposing unacceptable conditions.
