The treaty could end the “unlawful use of force” and violations of the UN Charter in war, Pretoria’s foreign minister has said.
South Africa has welcomed a peace deal between the US and Iran aimed at ending the war in the Middle East, saying it could provide a framework for lasting peace and regional stability.
South Africa calls on all regional stakeholders to respect the cessation of military hostilities. Furthermore, the nation encourages strong cooperation towards the comprehensive implementation of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) and the finding of specific solutions.
The Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Ronald Lamola said “The agreement between the United States and Iran hopes to end the illegal use of force and violations of the United Nations Charter in this war”.
The minister noted that South Africa has always advocated resolving international disputes through dialogue instead of armed conflicts. He added that the MoU lays the foundation for lasting peace and regional security in the Middle East by strengthening the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the importance of peace for all nations.
In order to reduce the negative impact on growth and recovery paths, reopening the Strait of Hormuz is necessary to calm the volatility of the global oil market and address food and energy security issues affecting developing nations, emphasized Minister Lamola.
He also said that South Africa expresses its gratitude to the governments of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the Sultanate of Oman, and the State of Qatar, as well as other countries that contributed appropriately in this process.
In efforts to find stability in the Middle East and neighboring areas, South Africa calls on all parties involved to commit themselves to finding a just and lasting peace.
