Two US Army soldiers have been injured after encountering a brown bear at a mountain training area in Anchorage, according to the military.
The incident happened on Thursday when the soldiers were participating in a “land navigation training event” in Arctic Valley, part of the Joint Training Area Elmendorf-Richardson.
The soldiers were receiving treatment as of Friday, a military official told the Anchorage Daily News. Questions sent to the base were not immediately returned Friday.
The conditions of the soldiers were not released pending notification of relatives.
Both troopers used pepper spray on the bear, the officer said. Little other information was available about the incident because the investigation was still ongoing.
“The safety and well-being of our personnel is our highest priority,” Lt. Col. Jo Nederhoed, a spokeswoman for the 11th U.S. Army Air Forces, said in an email to the Anchorage Daily News.
