8 people have been injured after a man rammed his car into pedestrians in Modena, Italy

Eight people were injured on Saturday when a car plowed into pedestrians in the center of the northern Italian city of Modena, police and the city’s mayor said.

Police said they arrested the driver, a man in his thirties, and there was no further danger.

Among the injured, four people are in serious condition, the mayor of the city, Massimo Mezzetti, told RaiNews24.

The driver is an Italian citizen born in Bergamo, of North African descent, and a resident of Modena, the mayor added.

“It seems (the driver) drove deliberately on the side of the road, hitting several people and hitting a shop window. Then he got out of his car and brandished a knife,” Mezzetti said.
