A cargo ship near the Strait of Hormuz has reported being attacked by multiple small vessels, the British military’s Maritime Operations Center said on Sunday, marking at least 22 attacks in and around the strait since the Iran war began.
All crew members on the unidentified northern vessel were safe after the attack off Sirik, Iran, in the eastern strait, a monitor said. Iranian officials have insisted that they control the sea route and that ships with no ties to the US or Israel can pass if they pay tolls.
There were no immediate claims of involvement in the attack, the first reported in the area since April 22 when a cargo ship reported being fired upon, the monitor said. The threat level in the area remains significant. Tehran effectively closed the strait by attacking and threatening ships.
Iranian patrol boats, some with twin outboard engines, are small, nimble and difficult to detect and have attacked several ships. US President Donald Trump last month ordered the US military to “shoot and kill” small Iranian boats that are laying mines in the strait.
The three-week ceasefire appears to be holding, although Trump on Saturday told reporters that more strikes were still possible.
Iran makes a new proposal to the United States to end the war
Iran’s latest proposal to the United States calls for the issues between them to be resolved within 30 days and aims to end the war instead of extending the ceasefire, according to media linked to the Iranian government.
