Three people, including a child, are in a critical condition in hospital after a terrifying day on Melbourne’s roads.
Detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit were called to Airly Road in Airly, about 225 kilometers east of Melbourne at 8am on Tuesday after reports that a Kia Carnival and a Kia Sportage had collided.
A spokeswoman for Ambulance Victoria said a school-aged child at Carnival suffered upper-body injuries and was flown to the Royal Children’s Hospital in a serious condition. A woman, aged 60, in the Sportage suffered life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to The Alfred, also in a serious condition.
A second woman in her 30s and another school-age child were also taken to Latrobe Regional Hospital.
“Two other occupants of the Carnival, a woman and a child, suffered minor injuries,” police said.
“The investigation into the circumstances of the collision is ongoing.”
Less than an hour later, emergency services were called to the scene of a collision between a motorcyclist and a lorry on the Calder Freeway in Keilor.
Police believe the motorcyclist collided with two cars and a lorry at around 8.50am, and the 21-year-old was then thrown under the rear trailer of the lorry.
He suffered serious injuries to his lower body and was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition, but police said the metallic truck continued on the highway. “It is unclear whether the driver was aware of the collision,” they said.
Speaking to ABC Radio later in the afternoon, Brimbank Highway Patrol senior sergeant John Sybenga said the collision appeared to have occurred in heavy traffic.
“At this time, we still do not know the registration of the truck involved, I do not indicate that he is in trouble, it is possible that he was completely unaware of the collision that occurred when it passed under his rear tire, but we are just trying to see if anyone has dash cam images of anything in the area.
“We know the motorcyclist came onto the Calder Freeway above Sunbury at about 8.40am, and the collision happened at 8.52am.”
Anyone with information about any collision is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online to www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
