A Somali-born British man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a car plowed into pedestrians in London.

Five people suffered non-life-threatening injuries when a car plowed into shoppers in Ealing Broadway on Saturday. The Metropolitan Police said the driver fled the scene but was arrested in nearby Grange Park a short time later.

“The driver, a 34-year-old British man born in Somalia, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and attempted murder,” a police spokesman said.

“While investigators are keeping an open mind on any possible motive, the incident is not being treated as terrorism,” the police said.

The incident occurred amid heated debate about immigration rates and violent crime involving immigrants.

Earlier this month, a Sudanese asylum seeker was accused of attacking a man with a knife in a street in Belfast. The attack, which was caught on camera, sparked riots in the capital of Northern Ireland. Days later, a British man of Pakistani origin allegedly stabbed a 17-year-old girl in Brierfield.

Anti-apartheid protests later took place across Britain. In Glasgow, Scotland, anti-apartheid activists clashed with protesters.

Last week, a gunman injured five people on the streets of Edinburgh in what Prime Minister Keir Starmer described as an attack on Muslims. It is said that the suspect said after he was arrested that he was “protect the country” from Muslims.

The violence came against the backdrop of a report released by Restore Britain leader Rupert Lowe detailing how many Pakistani men raped and molested large numbers of white British girls in almost half of British boroughs for decades.
