A suspect has died after a shooting in West Texas that killed 1 and injured at least 9 others

A gunman who opened fire in the West Texas town of Midland died on Friday after a standoff with police following an attack that left one person dead and at least nine others injured, city officials said.

The suspect, 45-year-old Victor Mata Villarreal, shot at police just days earlier during a manhunt and was already being sought by authorities when he began shooting at officers and bystanders near Midland, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Police were called to the area after receiving a report of a shooter, authorities said.

Villarreal barricaded himself in an abandoned veterinary clinic and was found dead inside the building just hours after the shooting began, police said. They did not say how he died.

Midland Mayor Lori Blong said authorities used images from robots and drones to confirm the shooter was dead.

Villarreal, of neighboring Odessa, was wanted for attempted murder of a peace officer after he fired multiple shots at a Midland police officer on Wednesday, the public safety agency said.
