Asian Games: Brown, Elg injuries leave Hong Kong’s hopes of a third medal in tatters

Hong Kong have named their strongest ever triathlon squad “in a long time” for September’s Asian Games, although doubts remain whether Bailee Brown and Robin Elg will overcome their injuries in time to compete in Japan.

With Oscar Coggins automatically qualifying following his recent Asia Triathlon Super Sprint Elite title, and Elg entering the show, Wong Tsz-to took third men’s place ahead of Paris Olympian Jason Ng Tai-long.

After having the slight misfortune of missing out on selection for last year’s National Games, Tallulah Wright has been selected along with twins Cade, and Brown, leaving no room for Hilda Choi Yan-yin, the mixed bronze medalist in 2018.

Andrew Wright, the head coach, who is not related to the sisters, said he “could not discuss individual cases” but that selection decisions were based on “how the athletes have performed, as well as who can deliver medals or help others deliver medals”.

“It is our strongest squad for a long time, but the level of other nations is also stronger,” he added.

Wong looks set to be rewarded for finishing well ahead of Ng at the recent Asian race and continental cup event in Lianyungang last month.
