Invisible street artist Banksy on Thursday confirmed he was behind a new crowd-pulling work in central London: a sculpture of a man in a suit entering the void while holding a flag that blocks him from view.
The monument, which has Banksy’s name scrawled at the base, was first seen on Wednesday outside Pall Mall’s high street.
The man depicted is placed on a high plank, with one leg sticking out of it, and appears to be unconsciously leaving the stage, thanks to the flag covering his face.
“The artist unveiled the unsolicited monument sometime yesterday morning,” Banksy’s spokesman said in a brief statement, as buzz grew about the new work in the British capital.
“It is placed on a traffic island in Pall Mall where Banksy said ‘there was a bit of a gap’.”
Banksy, whose real identity has not been officially confirmed, posted a video on his Instagram account showing his installation under the cover of darkness using heavy machinery.
