British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Wednesday he would “not yield” to pressure to join the Iran war after US President Donald Trump threatened to scrap Britain’s trade deal.
“We will not be dragged into this war. It is not our war,” Starmer told parliament.
“I will not change my mind. I will not agree. It is not in our national interest to join this war,” the Labor leader added.
In a telephone interview with Sky News, Trump threatened to change the agreement reached with Britain that limits the effects of his US tariff blitz.
Trump, who has repeatedly criticized Starmer’s policies, said tensions in relations with the Nato ally “will not adversely affect King Charles’ state visit to the United States this month.”
Commenting on the royal trip, Starmer told parliament that “the long-term bonds of the two nations … are greater than any person who holds any office at any time”.
