Canadian tourist killed, 6 injured in shooting at Mexican archeological site



A Canadian woman was shot dead and four others were injured by a gunman on Monday in of Mexico the famous Teotihuacan archaeological site, authorities said.

The gunman killed himself after opening fire at the popular tourist attraction, home to pre-Aztecan pyramids, said Cristobal Castaneda, security secretary of Mexico state, where the site is located.

Videos on social media show the gunman firing repeatedly from the center of the Pyramid of the Moon as tourists hide behind the stairs below.

President of Mexico Claudia Sheinbaum It said in a statement on social media that federal and state security forces were being deployed to the site and that its administration was in contact with the Canadian government.

“What happened today in Teotihuacan hurts us deeply. I express my sincere solidarity with the affected people and their families,” Sheinbaum wrote.

Mexico’s security cabinet said the injured were receiving medical care. Canada The foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
