Welcome to The Logoff: President Donald Trump’s Justice Department is investigating a woman who accused him of sexual harassment.
What is happening? On Wednesday evening, we learned that E. Jean Carroll – a writer and consulting writer who claimed in 2019 essay and two subsequent lawsuits in which Trump attacked him decades ago — are now under federal criminal investigation in Illinois.
The investigation has yet to produce an indictment — and it may never — but its mere existence is another indication of the extent to which Trump has used the justice system to punish his enemies.
What is the DOJ investigating? investigation, which CNN first reportedis said to be considering false allegations against Carroll over a statement he made in 2022.
At the time, Carroll said — falsely — that he had not received outside funding to support his civil lawsuit against Trump. Like my partner Zack Beauchamp he explainshowever, a federal appeals court already concluded in 2024 that there was no evidence that the misrepresentation was intentional, and Carroll may have simply forgotten.
As one legal expert he said to Zack Thursday, even if Carroll is indicted, “The sentencing will not happen.”
Why Carroll? Carroll is not alone in accusing Trump of immorality or sexual harassment; at least 27 women they have done so to this day. His claims, however, have been costly and embarrassing for Trump: He was found guilty in 2023 of sexually harassing and defaming Carroll, who also won more than $88 million from him in two civil judgments. (The money has not yet been paid, like Trump continues to appeal.)
He will certainly continue that – but at least so far, he continues to fail, too.
