Fifa World Cup finals: what factors favor Argentina, what factors favor Spain

Spain vs Argentina: two soccer giants are expected to fight for the most prestigious title in the world game.

Sunday’s World Cup final in East Rutherford, just outside New York, has more to offer than a clash between superstars Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal.

Here’s a look at what speaks in favor of defending champions Argentina and what speaks in favor of European champions Spain.

What can help Spain?

Immunity: Spain have conceded just one goal heading into the final, in their 2-1 quarter-final win over Belgium. Before that, goalkeeper Unai Simón played 649 minutes without conceding a goal, setting a World Cup record.

Left back Marc Cucurella, in particular, stands out in the defensive unit as a tireless fighter. But his wing-mate, Pedro Porro, is also having a big impact on the game and scored his first two international goals at this World Cup. This partnership helped Spain shut down France’s magical offense in the semi-finals.

Change: The Spanish style of play focuses on possession and control, but not only that. One of the things that Luis de la Fuente’s team can do well is adapt to any situation, according to captain Rodri.

“We’re a well-rounded team, and that’s why we’re here,” the midfielder insisted. The 30-year-old is expecting a physical match against Argentina.
