Sustainability: Add a token per kWh
The disruption in the Strait of Hormuz has sent shockwaves through energy markets. In Europe, the price of natural gas is to about 50 percentage from the end of Februarywith storage sites expected to be refilled to capacity 76 percentage capacity by October – their lowest level since 2011 heading into winter.
At the same time, the increased use of AI puts pressure on the energy grid; electricity consumption from the European data centit iss is expected to increase by 49-187 percentage until 2030. We must therefore avoid the perverse temptations of ‘tokenmaxxing’ and, instead, adopt a more efficient approach aimed at maximizing tokens per kWh. To use ‘right-size’ AI models that can be small or industry-specificemploying smarter infrastructure and decarbonizing data centers can help.
Speed is the new currency
The pace of change is undoubtedly a challenge. From conversations with CEOs in various industries, I know many feel overwhelmed by the pace of change. But this is not business as usual anymore; this is the time to accelerate business transformation.
The good news is that, with clean data and a well-defined use case, the time it takes to move from AI testing to a scale solution is short. Across the industry, our clients are seeing the return on investment compounding: financial crime and ‘know your customer’ banking; autonomous supply chains and demand forecasting in consumer goods; digital twins and predictive maintenance in vehicles; and citizen services and communication centers in public services.

Indeed, if this is the pace I am more confident about European competitiveness today than I was a year ago – even in a difficult macroeconomic environment – because the conversation has changed. Twelve months ago, many organizations were still trying to understand the potential of AI. Today, the goal is how to implement it in a way that both captures value and strengthens Europe’s position.
As AI continues to gain momentum, Europe’s competitiveness depends more on the speed of implementation.
