Hundreds of alleged members of the Mara Salvatrucha gang sat chained, shaved and silenced as they stood accused of murder and torture during a mass trial at El Salvador’s notorious CECOT prison on Thursday.
Sitting in neat rows of plastic chairs in the main prison hall, 220 defendants were jointly accused of carrying out more than 29,000 murders.
“We burned his private parts and buttocks” said a witness on the microphone, testifying in the public trial the President of El Salvador compared to the Nazi leaders in Nuremberg.
Among those brought to court are approximately 20 alleged leaders and dozens of lieutenants, many with tattoos on their faces, heads, arms and necks.

Others staring at journalists. They were all wearing white T-shirts and shorts.
