Hong Kong’s interest in the French Open is over after Eudice Chong and her partner Veronika Erjavec crashed out in the third round of the women’s doubles on Monday.
After going through a pair of three-set encounters to set up a date with Shuko Aoyama and Liang En-shuo, Chong and Slovenia’s Erjavec were beaten 6-1, 6-3 by the Japanese-Chinese Taipei duo.
However, Mainland China still has a player left in women’s doubles, after Guo Hanyu teamed up with French Kristina Mladenovic to beat China’s Zhang Shuai and Belgium’s Elise Mertens who are in third place.
The 13th seed, who won 6-2, 6-4, will now face Aoyama and Liang.
The first Hong Kong woman to reach the last 16 of a major tournament, Chong pocketed €22,500 (US$26,200) for her week’s work in Paris. Currently the number 71 doubles player in the world, he also claimed 240 ranking points and jumped to 61st in the outright standings.

Reaching the quarter-finals would have been worth €18,500 and 190 points, but Chong and Erjavec made worse starts against their unbeaten opponents.
