Two-time Asian Games gold medalist Salom Yiu Kam-shing is aiming to unleash the next generation of local rugby sevens stars for Hong Kong.
The 38-year-old, who retired after the 2024 Hong Kong Sevens, represented the city in the tournament for 14 years and set a city record of 75 matches in the short format. He is also Hong Kong’s all-time leading scorer in 15-year-old rugby, with 20 tries in 49 matches.
After taking time out from his career, Yiu joined Hong Kong China Rugby to support the development of local talent, and heads the Dragons Program, a performance program aimed at nurturing home-grown players that was relaunched last year.
“I enjoy the job because I help many local rugby players improve, and witness the development of local players,” Yiu said.
“I hope more Chinese will participate in this game.”
With Cado Lee Ka-to out injured, Fong Kit-fung was the only local player in the city team that took home the title for the Melrose Claymores in last week’s Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens.
