Fencing world champion and first-time qualifier Ryan Choi Chun-yin grabbed a big prize when he was named the men’s “best of the best” at the Cathay 2025 Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards on Tuesday.
Choi, who last year became the men’s foil world champion in Tbilisi and became world No. 1, also won two other awards during the event at the Hong Kong Exhibition Centre, which was attended by Deputy Chief Secretary for Administration Warner Cheuk Wing-hing, and Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law Shuk-pui.
Swimming star Siobhan Haughey, meanwhile, reclaimed her throne in the women’s category, with the multi-Olympic medalist recognized for her achievements at the National Games late last year. Haughey’s win adds to his three previous top prize wins after a gap last year.
The winners were named after one month of voting, where judges, media and citizens chose five male and five female sports stars from 41 and 39 nominations, respectively.
Along with Haughey, women’s honors went to fencer Kaylin Hsieh Sin-yan, who defended her individual épée gold medal at the World University Games in Germany last July; karate world No 1 and world champion Grace Lau Mo-sheung; cyclist Ceci Lee Sze-wing, who won a hat-trick of gold medals at the National Games; and snooker star Ng On-yee.

Haughey’s fourth “best of the best” award was also the decorated swimmer’s seventh overall since his first win in 2017.
