In an interview after the match, a team representative said that “it’s a cruel way to leave the tournament; the players gave everything, and to see it decided by a VAR sideline call in the last seconds is very difficult to accept.”
This World Cup heartbreak adds to an already painful year for Senegalese football. The team and its fans are still suffering from the unusual turmoil 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). During the final against host nation Morocco, Senegal’s players made a short trip to protest a controversial half-time penalty.
Although Senegal eventually returned to the field with a 1-0 victory, celebrating as champions, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) later issued a harsh administrative decision. CAF announced that the away trip was an official loss. As a result, Senegal was stripped of the championship, and Morocco was given a technical victory of 3-0 goals.
