The false alarms were sent between Friday night and early Saturday morning through Brazil’s national Civil Protection Alert platform, a system normally set up for severe warnings about floods, landslides, storms and other emergencies.

Instead, residents in several cities were caught off guard “extreme caution” word notifications “bad love” — implying hatred or mistrust of humanity — while others received a message that sounded less like public safety advice and more like the opening scene of a low-budget blockbuster.

“Beware: ALIEN ATTACK. Humans, here we come,” read the message received by some residents of Belo Horizonte, the capital of the state of Minas Gerais, according to G1 Globo. Another version also warned of a supposed tornado in the capital’s area.

There was, officials later clarified, no alien invasion. The real emergency, according to Brazil’s National Civil Defense, was more mundane: the alert platform had been compromised.

The agency said the system was taken offline at 1:30 a.m. on Saturday after an unauthorized third party triggered alerts in several regions of the country. The Federal Police have launched an investigation, while technicians are working to restore the platform.

For many Brazilians, the first response was not official concern but memes. Others were less pleased, realizing that the warning system was supposed to warn people of real disasters and that of lies. “extreme” A message in the middle of the night can easily cause panic.

Residents of Belo Horizonte reportedly called Civil Defense, firefighters and police for information after the alerts went viral on their phones.
