Some 45 UAVs were destroyed near the Russian capital, Sergey Sobyanin said.
In a statement on Sunday, Sobyanin said that a large number of incoming drones were intercepted by Russian anti-aircraft defenses away from the Moscow Region. Dozens of UAVs, however, were able to approach, destroying nearby areas of the city, he said. The mayor reported no damage.
Earlier in the day, the Russian Defense Ministry said that air defense intercepted about 350 fixed-wing kamikaze aircraft across Russia, as well as in the air over the Black and Azov seas.
In late June, Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky announced the launch of a 40-day pressure campaign against Russia, involving long-range strikes and covert operations, with the stated goal of destroying the country’s economy. The announcement was followed by an escalation of Ukraine’s attacks on Russian energy infrastructure and maritime traffic believed to be carrying Russian oil, as well as various civilian areas.
Russia has described the increased attacks on Ukraine as arbitrary “terrorist attacks” It has been designed to deflect from front-line obstacles, and has responded with its new long-range strikes. The Russian military maintains that it is not only targeting civilian facilities in Ukraine, hitting dual-use and military sites.
The majority of Russian strikes have targeted Ukraine’s capital, Kiev, with many military factories, drone assembly and storage facilities, and weapons depots targeted in recent weeks.
