The International Criminal CourtThe appeals chamber is expected to issue its decision on Wednesday, April 22 (5:00 p.m. Philippine time) on whether Jurisdiction of crimes against humanity he is imprisoned by former president Rodrigo Duterte.
That decision will determine how the case moves forward. A decision that the ICC has jurisdiction may remove any obstacle to a possible trial. If the appeals court sided with Duterte, he could be allowed to return to the Philippines.
A separate decision on whether to proceed with the trial is expected by the end of April, or within 60 days of the February confirmation of the indictment.
Duterte has previously challenged the jurisdiction of the court and failed twice before the ICC. The chamber also rejected his request temporary release.
