ZEE5 acquired the rights to stream the tournament in India through a last-minute deal, a move that would position it as a major contender in the sports streaming game. Instead, it has become an example of how to handle peak traffic. From the start of the tournament, users reported endless buffering, failed logins, and streams dropping at critical times. And the higher level matches were where the platform seemed to struggle the most.

In an era where international broadcasters are offering aggressive 4K broadcasts, ZEE5’s streaming quality has been another poor step. While some devices managed Full HD, netizens were stuck with 480p streams, a drop-off that didn’t sit well with soccer fans expecting a better experience for premium tournaments. With a competition of this caliber, 48 teams, over 100 games, anything seamless feels like a letdown, and the fans noticed.

The registration confusion is turning ugly

If the buffering wasn’t enough, the ZEE5 also found itself mired in registration confusion. Users claimed that device sharing limits changed after purchase, causing much confusion and anger. What was advertised as multi-device access suddenly felt restricted — and fans weren’t having it.

Now, only 2 can watch at a time.” Another echoed the same frustration over pricing and access: “@ZEE5India @unite8sports is another scam for Indian football lovers. I never watched any World Cup with such a premium subscription. I want to watch the tournament for 40 days, but I have to subscribe for 3 months of Z5. Why?”

Fans cried: ‘Such a huge scam’

Perhaps the harshest criticism has come from users who feel misled by the platform’s promises. One scathing response read: “@ZEE5India You promised three rounds, but after taking my money, you only gave me one. If you can’t deliver, why give false hope in the first place? Why change your words after taking payment? Such a big scam.”

What makes the opposition even bigger is that ZEE5 was reportedly upgrading its infrastructure ahead of the competition, anticipating heavy traffic. But when the time came, the system seemed to buckle under the pressure.

The FIFA World Cup should unite fans, not disappoint them. ZEE5 had the opportunity to deliver seamless, premium viewing experience to millions of Indian football lovers. Instead, it’s battling backlash, memes, and mounting criticism. There’s still time to get things right, but in the fast-moving world of live sports, first impressions matter.

And this one? It buffers badly.
