Just when football fans thought they were getting ready for the biggest spectacle in the world, their screens froze, and their patience snapped. What should have been a momentous moment for ZEE5 has quickly turned into a PR nightmare, with Indian viewers flocking to social media in frustration over buffering streams, app crashes, and what many are calling outright “scamming” tactics during the FIFA World Cup 2026 advertisements.
World Cup live stream
ZEE5 acquired the rights to stream the tournament in India through a last-minute deal, a move that would position it as a major contender in the sports streaming game. Instead, it has become an example of how to handle peak traffic. From the start of the tournament, users reported endless buffering, failed logins, and streams dropping at critical times. And the higher level matches were where the platform seemed to struggle the most.
One angry user summed up the frustration perfectly: “So @ZEE5India can’t handle midnight. Brazil match against Morocco! God knows what will happen when the tournament goes to the BIG playoffs!”

Quality that didn’t live up to the hype
In an era where international broadcasters are offering aggressive 4K broadcasts, ZEE5’s streaming quality has been another poor step. While some devices managed Full HD, netizens were stuck with 480p streams, a drop-off that didn’t sit well with soccer fans expecting a better experience for premium tournaments. With a competition of this caliber, 48 teams, over 100 games, anything seamless feels like a letdown, and the fans noticed.
The registration confusion is turning ugly
If the buffering wasn’t enough, the ZEE5 also found itself mired in registration confusion. Users claimed that device sharing limits changed after purchase, causing much confusion and anger. What was advertised as multi-device access suddenly felt restricted — and fans weren’t having it.
One user did not hesitate: “@ZEE5India is still the biggest scam?? When I signed up, it was for 3 devices. Now, only 2 can watch at a time.” Another echoed the same frustration over pricing and access: “@ZEE5India @unite8sports is another scam for Indian football lovers. I never watched any World Cup with such a premium subscription. I want to watch the tournament for 40 days, but I have to subscribe for 3 months of Z5. Why?”
Fans cried: ‘Such a huge scam’
@ZEE5India big scandal yet?? When I signed up it was for 3 devices now only 2 can watch at the same time. #zee5india #zee5 scam #deception

@ZEE5India It is advertised as 4 devices with 4K streaming. After purchase, the subscription shows only 2 devices with 720p/1080p resolution. Customers paid for what was advertised. This is a misrepresentation. #ZEE5 Fraud

Beloved @ZEE5India,
I signed up for the WC’26 all-access package with 3 device support. However, I now found that the device limit had been reduced to 1.
This distinction is misleading and unfair to consumers. @jagogorahakjago @user @MIB_India#User Rights #ZEE5 #zee5 scam– Abhirup Das 🟡 (@ad_thefootieguy) June 11, 2026
Deceivers. I bought it before 12.00 am according to your “tonight” description and it still shows 1 device. #Zee5 Scammer

@ZEE5India
I know you are a poor company asking for money but I didn’t know you are poor and dishonest to the customer. First you took ₹799 for 3 devices and with you T&C you changed it to 1 device.
Go well
However, no one will take your World Cup registration post #zee5 Fraudster– Tathagata (@tathai96) June 11, 2026
The worst. Garbage. It’s sad.
After announcing 4k streaming, Zee offered only 720p. The screen limit scam also exists. @ZEE5India it took Indian football fans for granted. #zee5 scam #zeekam https://t.co/pMGbOIHCtI— Raj Shekhar Barman (@RSBarman) June 12, 2026
Perhaps the harshest criticism has come from users who feel misled by the platform’s promises. One scathing response read: “@ZEE5India You promised three rounds, but after taking my money, you only gave me one. If you can’t deliver, why give false hope in the first place? Why change your words after taking payment? Such a big scam.”
What makes the opposition even bigger is that ZEE5 was reportedly upgrading its infrastructure ahead of the competition, anticipating heavy traffic. But when the time came, the system seemed to buckle under the pressure.
The FIFA World Cup should unite fans, not disappoint them. ZEE5 had the opportunity to deliver seamless, premium viewing experience to millions of Indian football lovers. Instead, it’s battling backlash, memes, and mounting criticism. There’s still time to get things right, but in the fast-moving world of live sports, first impressions matter.
And this one? It buffers badly.
