Iran’s top military official said on Saturday that new clashes with the United States were “possible”, hours after President Donald Trump said he was not satisfied with Iran’s offer of talks.
Iran submitted the new draft to a Pakistani negotiator on Thursday evening, state media reported, without elaborating on its contents.
The war started by the United States and Israel at the end of February has been suspended since April 8, while one round of peace talks has failed to take place in Pakistan since then.
“At this point I’m not satisfied with what they’re offering,” Trump told reporters, blaming the stalled negotiations on a “tremendous rift” within Iran’s leadership.
“Do we want to go and just blow them up and finish them off forever – or do we want to try to make a deal?” he added, saying he would “not prefer” to take the first option “on humanitarian grounds”.
On Saturday morning, Mohammad Jafar Asadi, a senior leader in Iran’s military supreme command, said “there is a possibility of a conflict between Iran and the United States”, in quotes published by Iran’s Fars news agency.
