Russia attacked Ukraine’s capital Kyiv overnight with one of the war’s biggest rockets, killing one person and wounding 16 others, President Volodymyr Zelensky said Sunday.
A series of loud explosions rocked the darkened city in an attack that involved 41 missiles of various types and destroyed buildings in several districts.
Residential buildings, warehouses, a supermarket and a dormitory are among the damaged buildings, said Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, adding that three people are in serious condition.
In one area west of Kyiv, emergency workers scooped up smoldering debris and emptied bombed-out homes.
A resident who identified himself as Vlad told reporters he was inside his home when the explosion tore open his balcony door, which hit him in the head.
“My grandmother lives with me, she can’t walk, how could I run and leave her?” He said.
Closer to the city center, the strike destroyed an underground pedestrian walkway near a metro station that is frequently targeted, leaving behind a pile of rubble.
