I’ve always thought that instead of criticizing him, we should celebrate the fact that the Inuktitut language has survived and is still very much alive in Canada and that our Governor General speaks it fluently. The importance of the North being recognized more than ever by Canadians, made Mary Simon a representative of our times. Sometimes statute books have to be looked at in a wider context. We, French-speaking people, are concerned about the survival of our own language, should we not understand more and give space to the languages of our indigenous people? After all, there are 12 official languages in South Africa.
